Ever get tired of having to update your decor or interior style because your space is so yesterday? And the world seems to have moved on to a bigger and better look? Each year we are faced with a new trend, color, hue, or style that we are so tempted to fall victim to, and redecorate areas of our home with. Well avoid the re-decorating frenzy with a few classic decor pieces that will never go out of style, and make you love your home year after year. But first:Hey There! Where have you been?!Let me rephrase.
Where have I been?! Life has been a whirlwind of activity the past few weeks. I took the stage as lead performer in a show, got sick and lost my voice while performing said show, and have gladly taken the last few days to recover. Did I say it’s been a whirlwind? “Rollercoaster” would be more accurate, but I digress.
Let’s chat about some must-have classic decor pieces for your home, that will save you money, time, and stress. If I haven’t said it before, I’ll say it now, I strongly dislike trends. I tend to skip over article titles that include “The latest” or “hot right now.” I don’t waste time researching styles and designs simply because it’s in style or everyone has suddenly become a fan of it. Also, I don’t have the energy to constantly revamp my home due to a trend I’ve grown tired of and never really liked to begin with.
I’d prefer classic decor pieces with versatility and style stability to last through the years. I’m not saying your home’s layout and design should never change, but when it does, you should have a few pieces that will remain fluid with a changing design. Also, you may grow tired of looking at the same items in the same areas of your home, and get the urge to switch things up every now and again. I’ve also spoken about the urge to purge and refresh your home’s design in the new year here.
So let’s explore 10 Classic Decor Pieces That Will Never Go Out of Style.
Antique Mirror
An antique mirror can move from room to room and gives any style a touch of class. Whether it’s contemporary, boho, or chabby chic.
Plants
Plants are great all over the home, whether placed in your bedroom, kitchen, or dining room. I’d recommend leaving them in their designated spot once established however. After becoming acclimated to one area and light source, it becomes harder for a plant to adjust to a new space. Plants can also provide awesome air purification benefits, and did I mention they look great in just about any room?
Persian Rug
I know you’re thinking this comes with a hefty price tag, but this is where you will save money over time. Persian rugs can last for a long time, and look even better when they show a few years of wear. Once you are able to get your hands on one, you may hold on to it forever. They also have a versatile style that can be used in any room and combined with various styles from eclectic to tuscan.
Books
I am a fan of personal libraries, not only because I love walls lined with shelves (and would like to have my own someday), but because they’re fun to decorate with. We’ve all drooled over those lovely vignettes spotted on designer dressers, desks and coffee tables. Many of them make use of books. Three stacked books are a great start to the perfect nightstand vignette.
Piano
This is another item that will save you money over time, again, because you will gain back value over the years kept. Also, a piano doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag if scored at a local yard sale, estate sale, or on craigslist. Older pianos have great charm!
Typewriter
An old typewriter gives any shelf or desk a classic vintage look and easily pairs with various interior design styles from swedish to classic contemporary.
Candles
Remember the books I mentioned earlier? Add a candle on top with a mini statue and and you have the beginnings of another beautiful vignette. Candles can be placed anywhere, and moved throughout your home whenever the mood strikes. They have complete versatility.
Trays
Trays can also be used as the foundation of stunning vignette, and can be moved throughout your home for various uses. Whether it is placed atop your dresser filled with perfume, on your living room ottoman with flowers and knick knacks, or on your bathroom counter with lotions, cotton balls, and hand towels.
Pottery
Whether large or small, pottery can be placed just about anywhere in the home, kept for a long time, and is compatible with many interior design styles. Place it on your nightstand to hold chapstick, bobby pins and travel size hand lotion, or place it on your desk to house a handful of gold paper clips. The choice is yours!
Card Catalog
I’ve spoken about card catalogs briefly in my post on budget decorating secrets, but if you’re lucky enough to score one of these at a garage sale or school district yard sale, they can be used for years to come. Card catalogs are great for any room, whether the bedroom, kitchen, or living room. Depending on its size, I don’t imagine you’d want to relocate one over time due to its weight, but they have great versatility.
There you have it. If you were confused about how to break out of the cycle of interior design trends, or just want to add a few classic decor pieces to your home, start here! The next time you want to switch things up a little, you’ll have a lot of style stability options to work with.

March 2, 2017 at 3:27 pmWhat great ideas! I would love to find a cute typewriter to use as a decor piece. We use our piano right now, but most of the time it gets little piles of kids treasures instead of cute decor.
