Breaking Design Rules: How to Mix Prints

We are Chic Misfits. Therefore, it’s only right to break the rules. Today we’ll learn about how to mix prints. In fact, this month, I thought I’d do a series on breaking all those boring design rules…more like restrictions. Like, colors should match, white gets dirty, sleep on a bed, blah blah blah. STOP it world. Stop telling us what to do.

Let’s tackle one that seems a little scary for many of us un-official designers out there: mixing prints, on prints, on prints. I know what you’re thinking, the only way it looks good is if it’s super expensive and designed by an interior guru. But don’t be afraid, you can break this rule and mix prints all on your own with style. Like those polka dots and that leopard print? Go for it!

Misfit tip: Traditional leopard print and black and white polka dots go with just about any print-ANY. Think of them as neutrals. Check out the photos below.

Black and White Stripes

Black and white stripes can also be a great neutral in your quest to mix prints.

Floral

Now what about floral? Gotcha covered. The trick to stacking floral prints, like with like or any other print, is to connect a common color or theme.

Here we have some common colors.

Common Theme/Color

Common themes and/or colors stand out in these designs.

Contrasting Colors/Themes

Sometimes there’s no common color, and there may not be a theme…it just looks darn good! Contrasting colors and themes can be a theme too right?!

Design can be just like clothes…it’s all about confidence. If it speaks to you, and yo u like it, do it! Rock those polka dots and paisley!

Check out my own mix of prints below, that I am so in love with! You like?
