How to Use Color Psychology in your Home

The color wheel is a complex thing isn’t it? Or is it just that we are, at times, highly indecisive human beings? We’ve all debated our interior color choices prior to tackling any blank canvas or re-design in our home. If you’re anything like me, your color decision process, is just that, a process. You decide on a design and color scheme, then stumble upon a trendy design feed on Instagram and you’re suddenly re-designing your entire plan. Giving no thought to the possibilities of how the use of color psychology in your home can work wonders.

This is a cycle that continues to occur until you’re almost out of time so you go with your latest design fixation out of convenience. Well instead of constantly allowing your plans to be derailed by your daily scour of news feeds, why not develop a design plan based on how you want to feel when you walk in a room? If this sounds hard, don’t be intimidated by the title. Using color psychology in your home is actually quite easy once you identify your desired feeling for each room and understand the colors that would produce such moods.

Let’s take a look at a few common moods and corresponding colors.

Calm

Have a stressful job, or a super chaotic and busy schedule? You may often desire to just get away, clear your head, and experience a calm environment. Blue is the perfect color to come home to, especially in the bedroom, as blues are best known to aid in restful sleep. Blue is considered a positive color that helps produce mental clarity, and encourage a calming atmosphere. Studies also show blues can lower the heart rate. If opting for a blue room, light use of dark or rich blues should be used to balance out light blues, as an overabundance of light blue can can appear too cold, producing an unwelcoming environment. Check out my picks for a calm blue bedroom below.

Stimulating and Inspired

Need to get the creative wheels turning? Purple stimulates ideas, promoting creativity, while pink increases excitement and activity. Why not combine the two, creating a fun and inspiring fuchsia haven that wets the creative whistle as soon as you walk in? The stimulation and inspiration derived as a result of these colors make it the perfect option for an office. I understand fuchsia may be an ambitious choice, but when paired with the sophistication of black and glamour of gold, this bold hue is balanced to bring any room the inspiration desired. Tranquil and Inviting

If you have a hard time getting the family together for any segment of time that does not involve food, you may desire a room that is inviting. You may also be looking for a tranquil space family and guests can gather for some relaxation. Accomplish these moods with green tones to create a harmonious space everyone will flock to. Green is also associated with wealth and health, and can create feelings of positivity. Check out my picks for a tranquil and inviting living room below.

I definitely need a blue bedroom to induce sleep. I’ve got that. But, I should change the color of my office to inspire creativity. Thanks for the suggestions.
