Oh subway tile, how I admire thee. You’re sleek, clean, and classic, which means you’ll never go out of style. If you love subway tile like I do, you were probably equally disappointed upon discovering your rental bathroom would never know the beauty and versatility of the timeless design that is subway tile. It instantly upgrades a room with so little effort, and allows you to make various transformations in a space over time while remaining the same. Well, I had to do something about this. I had to find a way to incorporate subway tile in my space, without violating my rental agreement by conducting an unauthorized bathroom demo. Cue, DIY subway tile art.
I just love it! It’s simple, yet chic, and was completed in less than 15 mins. Can’t beat that.
Here’s what you need:
- 16 x 20 Picture frame
- 10 x 13 Matting
- 6 Subway tile (1 cut in half)
- Black stock paper
- Super glue
First, lay out your paper and matting like so:
I purchased my black stock paper at Michael’s, which was just short of the matting size, therefore I had to purchase two sheets (only $0.79 each by the way!). Feel free to spice up the color if you’d like. I’m a lover of classic black and white so that’s what I chose.
Next, lay out your tile in what will be the final pattern, like so:
As I mentioned above, you will need one piece of tile cut in half. This can be done at most Lowes Home Improvement stores, though you may want to call ahead to confirm. Once all of your tile is set, make note of the remaining edge space. Now, begin to glue each piece in place, one by one. I began with the top left corner.
Press down firmly on the tile for 15 seconds after applying the superglue. After repeating this step for each piece, place a small amount of glue in each corner of the matting to secure the stock paper to the matting. Otherwise, the design will move around within the remaining edges of the frame.
Now, reassemble the frame, secure the backing, and Voila!
I’m so happy with the results, and the simplicity might I add. I especially like that this will never get old! Not to mention, your kitchen and bathroom will be fighting over this. I hope you like! Which room will I find yours in?
