I’m excited to have you embark with me on yet another design journey, beginning with this modern classic bedroom mood board. Though this may not be your first time joining me in this process, it is the first time I am planning a bedroom makeover with someone in mind in addition to myself.

Bedroom Makeover Style

I must say designing a room, let alone a mood board, with more than myself in mind presented some challenges. Fun challenges that is. I say fun because bringing multiple styles together to create one cohesive room that excites two people is something I love to do.

If you’ve ever watched House Hunters, I’m sure you’ve come across the typical couple that wants two completely different houses. The husband wants move-in ready, while the wife wants an older charmer with character. We’re not quite that extreme, but we definitely have two different styles.

I normally lean towards transitional and eclectic styles with touches of bold color, while my husband likes modern styles, clean lines and traditional color palettes. It sounds like complete opposites, I know. That’s why I find designing fun. There’s a way to mix styles that pleases both people, and is still stimulating to the eye.

Mixing our styles while creating one cohesive look, has birthed this modern classic bedroom mood board. While there are still some elements I may add for styling purposes, this is the foundation of our overall bedroom makeover.

Design Process

As I often do when I begin to design a room, I asked myself how I wanted to feel when I entered the room. I immediately knew I wanted to feel calm. As a result, I automatically thought of light shades of green. I always want my rooms to be stimulating to the eye, attractive, and have a level of sophistication, but I wanted to feel calm and invited.

Here are the green colors I considered:

They are all so gorgeous, but our room is dark, even with windows, so each of these colors could look quite different on our walls. Paint samples, here we come!

We’d previously had the room painted in Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore, which I love, so I knew the shade I picked would appear in an accent wall of some sort. I also had a hankering to add a little bit of architectural detail to the room. I then had to consider, whether to go for a modern wall panel design, or more traditional moulding design.

Here are a few inspirational designs we considered:

I leaned towards a more modern wall panel design, while hubby was set on a traditional moulding. Which one do you think we picked? Check back next week to find out!

After nailing down the paint options and determining which architectural detail to add to the accent wall, I was able to pull together other pieces that either complemented the color palette or were cohesive with the style. An accent wall, in a sophisticated modernish shade, naturally led this room into embracing a modern classic style.

Keeping in mind how I wanted to feel in my bedroom also helped determine which pieces stayed on my mood board or went.

Our master bedroom is also on the larger side, with a reading nook and sitting area in addition to our sleeping area. This is a lot to think about in terms of design, especially when sticking to a budget. Dressers, bed, sofa, lounge chair – the list could go on, and the costs could go up.

Therefore, we’re taking this in two phases, which also helped to keep this mood board under wraps during the design process.

DIY

Because any master bedroom makeover has the potential to come with a hefty price tag, I have a few DIY projects up my sleeve. Here’s what we’re thinking: the accent wall (of course), an upholstered platform bed (whoa), a reupholstered cognac velvet chair, and roman shades.

We’re hoping to keep the costs down by DIY’ing a few things, but stay true to our style. In other words, making chic style work on a not-so-chic budget. Learning to do this is no secret over here, so I’m up for the DIY challenge.

Overall, we’re hoping to stick as close to this mood board as possible. I know, however, sometimes the details may change once items are placed in a room and the styling begins. I may not like the way an item looks in person, or the color of a piece bought online clashes with one of our bigger purchases.

These things happen. What can you do?

A mood board and plan always helps to keep things on track. It also gets you excited and motivated for things to come, and that’s what we are. Excited for the makeover ahead, and motivated to tackle this project head on. I’m glad to have you following along and can’t wait to share more of the process with you.
